Reading Is Fundamental
(R.I.F.)

RIF Distribution Paperback Books:  READ is  pleased to be a participant of the Reading is Fundamental, Inc. Program (RIF), a national nonprofit organization that develops and delivers children’s and family literacy programs, which help prepare young children for reading and motivate school-age children to read regularly.  The RIF program motivates youngsters to want to read by offering them opportunities three times per year to select and keep a paperback book for their own.  Book distributions are funded in part by the U.S. Department of Education and our local READ organization.

In most cases, the Center Supervisor/Coordinator will organize a special day or week to conduct a RIF Distribution Day.  Key points from RIF include:

  • Children need to choose their new paperback book to keep.  A good selection of books should be offered.  In order to maintain compliance with RIF each site needs to have available at least 10% more books than needed for selection. (Suggestion:  10 students, a minimum of 11 books is needed)

  • Book distributions must be at least 30 DAYS apart.  Three separate distribution dates need to be scheduled throughout the year and each child will receive one book each time.

  • Recommended book distribution months are:

1st Distribution October or November
2nd Distribution December or January
3rd Distribution February or March
  • Each time a book distribution is completed, a RIF Worksheet needs to be completed by the Center Supervisor/Coordinator or designated volunteer and forwarded to the READ Office.  RIF requires that reports be sent to the Washington D.C Office three times during the year. ALL book distributions need to be completed prior to April 15.

  • Be sure children who are absent are able to select a book the next time you meet.

  • Motivational activities should be planned for each distribution date.  Be creative.

  • Encourage parents of children you mentor to support RIF’s mission by reading to and with their child on a regular basis.  If possible, invite parents to attend and help on RIF distribution days.  Children do better in school when their parents and families are actively involved.

All paperback books which are used in the RIF Distribution program, are stamped in the front inside book cover with the RIF Logo.
